In this unit

In this series of activities, students explore seasonal change, ecosystems and biodiversity through the Taribelang Bunda stories. They learn how Traditional Owners and scientists observe and monitor changes in nature to care for Country. Students then apply these ideas by investigating a local plant, animal or seasonal indicator and creating a seasonal calendar inspired by their own observations.

Country/Place

A_TSICP1
First Nations communities of Australia maintain a deep connection to, and responsibility for, Country/Place and have holistic values and belief systems that are connected to the land, sea, sky and waterways.
A_TSICP2
The occupation and colonisation of Australia by the British, under the now overturned doctrine of terra nullius, were experienced by First Nations Australians as an invasion that denied their occupation of, and connection to, Country/Place.
A_TSICP3
The First Peoples of Australia are the Traditional Owners of Country/Place, protected in Australian Law by the Native Title Act 1993 which recognises pre-existing sovereignty, continuing systems of law and customs, and connection to Country/Place. This recognised legal right provides for economic sustainability and a voice into the development and management of Country/Place.

First Nations Australian societies are diverse and have distinct cultural expressions such as language, customs and beliefs. As First Nations Peoples of Australia, they have the right to maintain, control, protect and develop their cultural expressions, while also maintaining the right to control, protect and develop culture as First Nations Cultural and Intellectual Property.

Reptile Researchers: Life Cycles

Year levels: 3-4 3 lessons

In this series of activities, students watch the Taribelang Bunda films Wake Up Meebar, Sea Country and Rangers on Country to explore the life cycles of freshwater and sea turtles. They investigate how scientists classify living things, play a game of animal Celebrity Heads, and create a life cycle wheel.

Year levels: 3-4 3 lessons

In this series of activities, students watch the Taribelang Bunda stories, Wake Up Meebar animation, Sea Country film and River Country film. They participate in yarning circles, and complete an animal classification activity. They explore how First Nations knowledges and science work together to care for native animals and protect Country.

Year levels: 1-2 3 lessons

In this series of activities, students explore the Taribelang Bunda story Booral Booral Dreaming and learn about the milbi (freshwater turtle). They investigate the shapes that make up a turtle's shell, and create their own turtle artwork.

In this series of activities, students watch the Taribelang Bunda story Wake Up Meebar and explore Meebar's remarkable journey. They discover how sea turtles navigate across vast oceans to return home, then reflect on the meaning of home and belonging through personal reflection and an art work.
